St Peter

Pulpit – Guide (Peter Tavy, undated) Chaytor (1990); 1926

The guide attributes most of the modern woodcarving in the church to Herbert Read of Exeter but says that the pulpit ‘is a small example of the work of Miss Pinwill who was a famous lady carver in Devon and Cornwall in the first half of the twentieth century’ (Ibid. p. 6) and was installed in 1926 as a memorial to Rev. F. J. Bryant, Rector 1879-1907. The faculty includes plans for this work by Herbert Read (DHC 1427A/PW/13) but the commission was obviously given to the Pinwill company instead.
