St George

Altar – no documentary evidence; possibly 1929

Pinwill work at Modbury has been described as ‘extensive alterations to the seating in the choir and east end’ (Chaytor, 1990 p. 67) but there is little woodcarving of any note in the choir stalls. However, on the altar in the south chapel there is low relief carving of two semi-kneeling angels either side of a chalice, brought to the author’s attention by Rosemary Griggs, that is sufficiently redolent of later Pinwill carving for this to be part of the work referred to by Chaytor. There is a faculty for a Holy Table in South Chapel dated 1929 (DHC 269A/1/PW/8), although this has yet to be investigated.
