St James

Roof Angel Heads (3) – Newspaper article (Western Morning News, 1893); probably 1894

Jacobstowe is mentioned in a newspaper article in November 1893 about an exhibition of wood carving in Plymouth: ‘Among the most interesting are the heads of three angels which will be fixed in the roof of Jacobstowe church’ (p. 3). On a visit there, these angel heads were not in evidence. They may have been ‘lost’ when the chancel was rebuilt and extended in 1902.

It is possible that the church in question is Jacobstow in Cornwall, which has two demi-figures of angels, one either side of the chancel arch. However, these are more than likely part of the rebuilding of the chancel that took place in 1886 (Beacham & Pevsner, 2014). It also seems unlikely that the Western Morning News would name the church Jacobstowe if it was in fact Jacobstow.
