Hampton Grammar School
Litany Desk – Photograph (PWDRO 116/118); 1930
According to the inscription, this litany desk was commissioned by John Greig, Old Hamptonian 1883-86 in 1930. It bears the crest and motto of the school on the front and a vine design on the side. The connection to the Pinwill woodcarving company is revealed in the 1921 census. The youngest of the sisters, Ruth Stackhouse Pinwill, married Henry Raymond Dawe (known as Ray) in 1914. By 1921, the couple was living in Chelsea and he was Modern Language Master at Hampton Grammar School (The National Archives, Census Chelsea 1921). Presumably it was Ray who recommended the Pinwill company for the work to carve a Litany Desk for the chapel there.
